A fine ceramic
Ru pottery is perhaps the first “official pottery” specifically commissioned by the imperial court. It would seem that careful analysis was practiced of the large quantities of tributary ceramics that came to the court, keeping only a few and redistributing the remainder as part of generous gifts addressed to court officials, temples, and foreign rulers, and perhaps some were intended for sale. Production ended when the kilns were occupied by invaders who conquered the northern Song in the 1120s; however, the ceramics remained famous and later highly sought after.
