Tokoname: the history of red clay teapots Tokoname utensils originated in the city of Tokoname, Aichi Prefecture, and is the most common of the six oldest schools of pottery in Japan (the others being Seto, Shigaraki, Etizen, Tanba and Bizen). Tokoname has a very long history, as chronicles say, in 1100, more than 3 thousand stoves were located on the Tita Peninsula, and the city of Tokoname was located in their center. They produced rice cups, dishes, pots, pitchers, and almost everything imaginable. Yaki Tokoname kilns (常 滑 焼) Tokoname kilns (Hojo, Niigata Prefecture) are one of the oldest ceramic centers in Japan, where tiles and cooking utensils have been produced since ancient times.
